Product
Cornelius J. Bergen, member of the Bergen family of Long Island, was born at Bay Ridge in 1814. Cornelius J. died in 1884. He had atwin brother, Alexander J. Bergen. In their early years they were engaged in the grocery business on Fulton street, near the Fulton Ferry. Later they became interested in real estate. Both spent some years in Europe.

Correspondence of James K. Polk, Volume X, July-December 1845, page 241 state "Alexander J. Bergen was a New York merchant in partnership with his brother Cornelius J. Bergen". On page 462 with date July 21 "From Alexander J. Bergen, ALS. DLC-JKP. Solicits appointment as U.S. consul to the Sandwich Islands". On page 518, "From John T. Bergen. ALS. DLC-JKP. Requests the appointment of his son, Alexander J. Bergen, as consul at Montevideo, and Paul K. Hubbs to the post of chargeé d'affaires to Uruguay".

Bergen and Alexander Bergen, took a very active part in the opening of that part of South Brooklyn that is near Carroll Park. In 1853 he bought one hundred acres of land at Newtown and named the tract Laurel Hill.
